First Open World Death in Classic

I finally had a character die out in the world in Classic. (I did have a few deaths on my druid in a dungeon). As predicted, it was because of stupidity, rather than the game being hard.

I was on my level 13 Warrior, and I joined a group of around the same level to kill Defias. After that, the group wanted to kill gnolls, so I tagged alone. They went to the southern gnoll camps, the ones with level 16 or so gnolls. That's +3 levels, so high enough to be dangerous, but there were four of us.

Surely it would be easy enough if we pulled carefully.

After killing one mob, I turned around and noticed the healer had managed to pull four level 16 mobs and was half-dead. Like an idiot I charged in instead of running away. And shortly thereafter we were all dead.

Otherwise, I'm pretty much just making low level alts in Classic. I have 7 characters between levels 7 and 15. Maybe I should just give up on Classic. It hasn't managed to really capture my interest. It really feels like the best or most optimum way to play is to play in as tedious a manner as possible. And the game is already tedious enough.

  1. Tedium or time? I don't mind the time part, if the action itself is fun. I don't actually HAVE the time... but that's a separate topic.

    1. Tedium, I think. It's mostly wandering around the edges of groups of enemies, picking off lone mobs. Now, if I was in a group, maybe it would be faster and more interesting.

  2. I had a class planned to play and stayed with it.
Maybe because i had some plans and all that, im having the time of my life.
I can't imagine myself making 7 characters and running them through low levels, it would kill my entusiasm.
I have a guild with internet and RL friends, im level 37, 215 fishing. Everything is going better than i imagined. Even being a lame warrior and having my first skill (Whirlwind) button to press at level 36.

To imagine people like different things!

    1. Yeah, I think not being able to settle on a class is a big part of my issue.

Maybe the answer is just to stick with paladin!

  3. It's all a matter of taste and also of personality. It's been seven years since I last played an MMORPG as compulsive, addictive and satisfying as Classic. My Hunter is 30, Warlock 13, Warrior 10, Mage 8 and Priest made but not started yet. Also Tailoring 150, Leathercraft 160 and several other trade skills in progress.

I would estimate I've died at least a hundred times on them all combined, quite possibly a lot more, all in open world since I haven't done a dungeon yet and quite possibly never will.

Far from being slow or tedious I find it almost perfectly paced. Possibly still a tad fast.

I also think it needs a significantly higher death penalty. The reason I die so often is that I can't really see a good reason to avoid it. If I'm in a fight that's close I just keep going. Sometimes I win. If I don't, what differecne does it make? Almost all corpse runs take no more than 30-60 seconds, which is trivial when compared to the time it takes just running from questgiver to quest location. Repair costs are so small as to be barely noticeable. If there was xp loss on death I'd have died about 90% less than I have but since there isn't, who cares?

I thought I'd last maybe a week or two in CLassic, write a few posts about it, unsubscribe and move on. Now it looks as though it could be main MMORPG for the rest of the year.

    1. That's an interesting point about the death penalty. Maybe I'm overrating how much it actually stings, and should take more risks instead of avoiding death so much. I'm pretty risk-averse in general, though.

I'll try to get into this mindset and give it a try.

  4. Hmmm, yes, "tedious" describes my experience pretty well. I'm playing several classes as well to get a feel on how they worked. Also, on retail I'm Alliance, on Classic all my characters are Horde, since it allows me to see the areas and quests I'm not familiar with. But the game is boring, I mean, it's identical to retail WoW, except it's slower. Killing mobs takes more time, travelling takes more time, there's no other real difference as a matter of fact. So my guess is that after this 3-month subscription there will be no renewal.... I've already played enough WoW.

    1. That's possibly another issue. I've already done all this before. It's not new to me at all. Maybe that's important, and I would be better off just playing a new game.

  5. Considering that you seem to prefer retail WoW, this would make sense that you'd not be as taken with Classic. I've not run into too many people who like both equally. I believe it's simply a matter of taste.

    1. Yeah, at the very least, Classic is an excellent experiment about the tastes of MMO players.
