Star Wars: The Old Republic Preview

Ouch. These guys probably aren't going to get any more previews or material from EA. Oddly courageous for the gaming media:
Our opinion of The Old Republic, formed over two solid days of playing, is that it’s one of the most boring titles we’ve ever had to endure. It’s plain and staid and deathly dull.

I don't know how absolutely accurate this will turn out to be, but I admire Bitgamer for being so willing to bite the hand that feeds them.

  1. Wow. They really put the hurt on Bioware for this. If there were some group that could topple Blizz, I figured it'd be them.

  2. Ha! I challenge their claim! Nothing involving "Star Wars" can be anywhere near as dull as FF14!

  3. I was shocked when I read this one too. Hell I don't even bother with sites like Gamespot or IGN anymore because they are all "on the take." Nice to see a gaming website with the guts to call it like they see it. And it looks like "Princess Leia's" pleas to save us from Blizzard are going to fall on deaf ears. :P

  4. I knew SW:TOR was going to be nothing special the day I heard it was going to be "EQ's holy trinity, in space". Sounds like it's "kill ten rats, in space" as well.

  5. the can actually work out well for bioware. negative publicity is still publicity and while some people might look at it and think, yah, I think I'll pass then, plenty more would want to see for themselves if the title is really as boring as those guys claim it is.

judging from other things I've read and vids that I saw (including character promo vids that use in game footage) ? I'm still reserving judgment, personally. Even DA2 is not nearly as bad as some claim it is - its just not up to bioware's usual standards of polish.

  6. @Leah: These things also sometimes lead to grassroots backlash by fans defending the game. Dunno whether the fact that it's still NDA-bound will affect that side of things or not.

  7. Im curious to read the whole article. That sounded like a shotgun blast of discontent with what they previewed. Im curious if it was a tour of the sewers of Taris or something haha

  8. Tobold made a good point on this, that it could help players enjoy the game more by managing expectations; which, come to think, could improve the game revenues as well. After all, if a player goes in thinking the game will not only be the best thing EVER, but it'll turn out more fun than even HE thinks... well, if he gets WoW in space, there could be a lot of rage-quits in the first free month.

But the people going in *expecting* WoW in space, with lightsabers! Gosh! With a few cool things, like voiceovers, on top maybe... Well -- there's actually some room for pleasant surprises there, and to enjoy the game... and wanting to pay a continuing subscription fee.

  9. Holy LED flashlight spam, Batman!

Back to the topic: I had no plans to check out SW:TOR - but now I'm curious if it is as awful as they make it seem. Lower expectations... FTW?

  10. The reader's should be the hand that feeds them and the gaming industry...

The idea that gamers would actually *pay* for something like news amuses me.

You, my friend, are far more of an optimist than I am.
