Healing in WoW Classic and FFXIV

I healed a Stockades with my Priest. Another paladin tank, it looks like there are many people creating paladin tank alts. You can tell that they're alts, because they all go up the Holy tree for Consecration first.

I really like healing in Classic. It's pretty basic. The damage is moderate, but it's all about managing mana. In fact, you don't necessarily have to cast a lot of healing spells. I get by with Renew for a lot of it. The 5-second rule for mana regeneration means that you try to "batch" your healing together and then wand for a while.

It's interesting to compare to FFXIV, because you probably spend the same amount of GCDs on heals. But FFXIV doesn't really tax your mana, and their DPS spells are cheap. So you end up spending most of your GCDs on damage rather than healing.

Why wouldn't you take consecration first on your main? I don't think tanking without any AE aggro is really viable (Rage tanks have their demo shout/roar).

    1. My experience is that new Paladin players who want to tank go up the Protection tree first. After all, that's the tanking tree. It's only the experienced players (or the one's who've read a guide) who start with Holy.

  2. Pally tanks aren't taken into raids in Classic --Warriors and Bears rein supreme there-- but because they're tanks they'll get into a ton of instances.

As for taking Consecration, that's about the only AoE aggro that Pally tanks have in Classic, so gunning for that first makes a lot of sense. What doesn't make sense is when someone running as a Ret or Prot Pally uses it when they're DPS in a group. I ran with a LBRS group last night and the DPS Pally kept doing that, which constantly broke my sheeping.

    1. Yeah, Consecration makes a lot of sense to an experienced player, but not necessarily to a new player, since it's in the 'healing' tree.

I'm kind of surprised a DPS paladin took it, but maybe they run a lot with mages. I find Classic mages just constantly AoE.

    2. You have no idea how annoying the constant AoE is, and that's coming from a mage as co-main.

Particularly at L60, Blizzard costs about 1100 mana, and that sucks a lot of your mana if you're constantly spamming it. (Same with Arcane Explosion, but on a lower level.) Therefore, if you're going to use it, have at least enough people in the mob to make it worthwhile. My rule of thumb is at a bare minimum I'll use 3 in the mob, and even then that's only when I'm sure the tank has good aggro. I personally prefer to single target because it's more mana efficient and you can work around stuns/sheeps/shackles/etc without breaking them. Additonally, it frees you up to be able to perform crowd control without giving up the 1100 mana for a blizzard you had to cut short.

There, I got my rant out of the way. I'm good now.
