Oh thank God, someone with sense. When the first 80 dinged on my server and sent out the world announcement, I actually had to mute general, trade, AND guild, because people were being so dumb.
I've long maintained that the quality of discourse on MMORPG's would be greatly improved by the banning of the c-word ("casual") for precisely this reason. The purpose of a word is to convey meaning from the speaker/writer/etc to the listener/reader/etc. When every single person has their own definition (or sometimes 2 definitions, depending on whether they're for or against the given topic), the word is no longer useful.
my guild mate just dinged first 80 on madoran... its amazing the hatred ppl show for u if u do something before them. he wasn't even sunwell geared and is just a leveling machine/achievement hound... yet its either BIG DEAL Naxx was done already, or WOW TAKE A SHOWER. pretty sad.
People create their own standards and they seem perfectly reasonable to them. Perhaps this is hypocrisy, but isn't it also an arbitrary standard to say that others should not use arbitrary standards? I see things in a range. Where I am is near the front of ridiculousness, perhaps two levels behind.
The "no life" comment is probably fairly accurate. I do think there's something wrong with people being 80 already, and there's definitely something wrong with a certain guild that has already cleared Naxx.
In the other direction, the noob direction, there's nothing much wrong. The amount a person plays will directly affect the speed at which they level, but the influence on skill or knowledge is much less certain. In other words, only a dumbass calls someone a noob because of their leveling speed.
This no-life nonsense is silly. I'm only midway through 72 and I have nothing against people who hit eighty already.
As for that guild that has already cleared all the raid content, they have sponsorships and get goodies (who knows exactly what. Maybe even a paycheck) for being the best.
I think getting to 80 by with in days of the expansion is a real accomplishment, atleast if no exploits were involved. People bashing the level 80's are probably just jealous. I plan on hitting 72 tonight as I only have one bubble left. I've been playing a lot, but then again I did level a DK to 59 and I don't rush, done plenty of 5 man dungeon runs. Also I don't know any of the quests. I'm sure most of the level 80's played beta to get expierence with the quests.
I think leveling to 80 in 3-4 days qualifies you as "not having a life", but then again I'm one of the ones that played for about 24 hours total over the weekend so who am I to say? (3.5 hours of sleep Sat night!!! Woohoo!!! LOL!!!)
I think people just want something to complain about.
How fast you levle to 80 (or any other levle) is mostly porportionate to the ammount of time spent in game (bar exploits etc). If someone has hit 80 in the first few days, clearly he put lots of time into the game.
If that is a matter of him or her not having a life, thats a different matter. And those taking their pace are by no means noobs (nor people with lives necessarily).
Some of my guildmates have hit 80, but as far as I know it was just for these few days that they played that much. Job well done, but now they have to wait for us mere mortals (:-p)
A guildie of mine got the realm-first level 80 BECAUSE he has a life. He specifically took some vacation-days off from work, and hard-core quested his way to 80 in a few days. Now he doesn't need to worry about leveling and can go back to his regular life while casually running instances and (eventually) raiding.
I know of a few people who just simply took time off to hit 80 or get close to it. I also know people who won't even buy wrath right now because they don't have the time.
My wonderment isn't "hate" driven or even "jealousy" it is more of a "why pay all that money for something and finish it in 12 hours" kind of thing. Relax, enjoy, have fun, see what is out there.
This is also a similar paradigm as to how anyone who drives slower then you is an Idiot and anyone who drives faster is an Asshole.
ReplyDeleteHumankind is not with out many its own hypocritical idiosyncrasies.
Best post ever!
ReplyDeleteI lol'd
When I win in world PVP against equal/higher levels, it's PVP. When I lose, it's ganking.

ReplyDeleteAmen to that... Never spoken truer

ReplyDeletegreat post though, my guild loved it. :)
A guildie mentioned there was already a lvl 80 on our server yesterday (two even), and it was met with the same response: "Wow, he has no life."
ReplyDeleteIt was satisfyingly silent after I copied your post into guild chat.
You play the game the way you want to, for God's sake let others do the same...

That's life... Do well and people hate you for it, do poorly and people ridicule you for it.
ReplyDeleteThere's a distinct merrit to just being ignored :)
Please, they didn't do WELL, they did MUCH. Any chimp could have done it.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if they like playing wow 20 hours and sleeping 4 crepeatedly, and can somehow manage to not have a job or school good for them.

ReplyDeleteBrilliant post Rohan.
ReplyDeleteMind you I still think we are entitled to use the description "No Lifers" for folks who finish the game even before they think up a name for their guild :D
Well said!

Myself? I'm barely level 72.
To each their own. :)
When I kill you, you suck. When you kill me, it's hacking/imbalance/exploits.
ReplyDeleteYou can apply it to many things. This should a philosophy.

ReplyDeleteJust wanted to give credit where it's due. This quote is from the late George Carlin:
“Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”
